  • If ever you’re looking for somewhere to take a visiting foreign friend to give them a sense of a true British pub, then the Vine Inn should be one of your first stops. The classic wood interior and open fire give a sense of wellbeing and comfort. There is a great selection of beers on offer too, including selected real ales. The vine Inn also offer a selection of classic board and card games giving you a great excuse to stay a little longer and sample all the beers on offer. If you are feeling a little peckish then the very reasonably priced no nonsense pub grub should suffice.

ViewView View, Chorlton Street, Manchester, M1 3HW map

  • Formerly Prague Five, View is an industrially themed dance venue at the top end of Canal Street. This bar gets very busy very quickly and there are often queues outside from around 9.30 at the weekend. With a more studenty atmosphere than most bars in the village, the trendy dressed clientele are averagely aged between 20 to 30 and later in the night this bar can become hot, sweaty and crowded.

Via December 6, 2006

ViaVia Via, 28-30 Canal Street, Manchester, M1 3EZ map

  • one of the first of the big clubs in the village, Via (previously via fossa) has just undergone a massive revamp, although you will be forgiven for not noticing the difference. In its heyday it was known for its virtually naked real life male statues and if you are heading into the village for the first time then you should visit here – many gay men who have just come out, do just that.  Make sure you get there early evening though as it gets very busy later on. One of the few big bars in the village with small hideaway seating areas, Via’s decor is a cross between plastic grandure and traditional wooden wine lodge

The staff are very friendly, the atmosphere is relaxed and the food is great.  From it’s picture postcard frontage to it’s boudoir feel inside, it’s a really inviting place, whether your gay or straight.  The menu continually gets good reviews and with such a huge selection its not surprising, you really do feel like a member of the velvet family when visiting this place.  It’s certainly one of the best bars in Manchester

Varsity – The Circus November 8, 2006

VarsityVarsity – The Circus Oxford Street, Manchester, M1 4BH map

  • Varsity, is the first city centre offering from the nationwide group of bars (others being in Rusholme, Didsbury and Bolton). It’s a large Barracuda Group chain bar offering drinks and food at great prices with a student bar-like feel to it. The free Varsity loyalty card is well worth getting if you want a 25% reduction on your drinks, together with discounts and freebies from a host of online companies.  It will be interesting to see how long this Oxford Street bar remains as Varsity, as the Barracuda Group have rebranded the chain (and this venue) three times so far.  It was originally Springbok, a South African theme bar, and then Barracuda, before changing to Varsity.
  • Food (British)
