It’s artisitcally decorated with the who’s who of famous local heroes from everyone from Tony Wilson to Les Dawson. With its excellent music and relaxing atmosphere, if you’re in the Northern Quarter, The Northern is a must visit. Trof March 31, 2007

TrofTrof 5-8 Thomas Street, Manchester, M4 1EG map

  • Starting out as an extremely popular student bar in fallowfield, Trof has now grown up and made the move to the extremely trendy northern quarter in manchester. Over 2006 and 2007 a countless number of bars have opened or are due to open in this already well populated part of manchester and Trof should be one that succeeds as long as it keeps to the successful recipe of great food, being served in very large portions at reasonable prices along with some quality imported beers and lagers from all around the world. All in all a great place to hang out, relax and enjoy an unusual beer and a meal, plus the added benefit for all manchesters thirty somethings is that it isn’t packed full of students… yet.

La TascaLa Tasca 76 Deansgate, Manchester, M3 2FW map

  • Another manchester first, la tasca is now a chain of tapas bars that you will find all accross the country. it all started here though and the opening of la tasca brought a new drinking and dining experience to mancunians in the 90s. the spanish themed menu offers good food at a reasonable price, added to that the latino beats spun by the weekend DJ in the basement club and the great spirit and cocktail offers and la tasca becomes a great all round party venue.  As well as restaurants over the UK, La Tasca have also started two new concepts, just a few doors down on Deansgate – La Vina (an upmarket Spanish tapas bar) and Pesto (an Italian tapas bar).

TaurusTaurus Taurus, 1 Canal Street, Manchester, M1 3HE map

  • A community venue in the village, Taurus is far more than a bar restaurant. The bar is well stocked and there is a great wine menu, the seating is comfy and the general ambiance is that of a trendy (but not overly so) new york loft apartment. The award winning menu is varied and reasonably priced, the fare being trendy bar grub with a few seasonal surprises added. One of the great things about Taurus is its ‘cultural’ basement offering various styles of performance from poetry and plays, to music and readings.

Mr Thomas's Chop House ManchesterMr Thomas’s Chop House – 52 Cross Street, Manchester, M2 7AR map

Mr Thomas’s Chop House offers one of the best eating and drinking choices in Manchester. The traditional British fayre is by no means plain and is prepared skillfully by award winning chefs, offering a regional bias. Entering Tom’s is like stepping back into history, a time of victorian gentlemen and ladies. Not only do you have the very atmospheric interia to enjoy, you can choose to drink and dine in one of Manchester’s finest al fresco environs, a great place to spend an afternoon people watching! Mr Thomas’s is extremely popular with local business diners and also gets very bisy in the evening.

The Tiger Lounge November 13, 2006

The Tiger LoungeThe Tiger Lounge 5 Cooper Street, Manchester, M2 2FW map

  • Tiger Lounge started out as a club night for those people that wanted to get away from the mainstream nights offered by most Manchester venues. It moved around the city a lot before finally finding a home in this basement bar near St Peters Square (formerly occupied by Slice and in the 70’s, Oscars). During the week The Tiger Lounge is a meeting ground for friends, playing alternative, kitschy music – everything from 60’s French pop to country and western! They play classic and rare movies and also offer food during the day. They regularly have theme nights and live music, which, together with FAB Cafe and Satan’s Hollow (from the same people), makes this a truely wonderful contribution to Manchester’s nightlife.

Teasers CafeTeasers Cafe 231-233 Deansgate, Manchester, M3 4EN map

  • Teasers has been around for some time now and has just undergone a massive refurbishment. The first Teasers bar outside of Amsterdam, after the Dutch owners stated ‘Manchester seemed the obvious choice’, the bar features a number of scantily clad men and women, dancing, flirting and serving drinks to the generally mixed clientelle. Drinks aren’t cheap but it is a different sort of night out and worth it, there are DJ’s playing most nights from R’n’B, Funky House, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and much more. As you’d expect, it’s very popular with birthday’s and stag and hen parties.

The Temple November 2, 2006

The Temple ManchesterThe Temple Great Bridgewater Street, Manchester, M1 5JW map

  • The Temple (formerly The Temple of Convenience) is a Manchester institution! A converted public toilet (yes, that’s right!!!), it’s one of Manchester’s smallest bars and is very popular due to it’s amazing array of foreign bottled beers and a great jukebox packed with Manchester bands (many of which drink regularly in here). The intimate seating planning encourages you to make new friends and that can often mean chatting to some of Manchester’s best-loved rock stars. The unisex toilet isn’t the cleanist in Manchester although the encouraged philosophical graffiti on the cubicle walls makes superb reading. The Temple is definitely a conversation starter and you’ll either love it or hate it, we adore it!
