Offering more of the same, i guess they are simply trying to get closer to their target audience, manchesters students, some of who live above the bar in one of MMU’s many residential blocks.

Socio Rehab

Socio RehabSocio Rehab Edge Street, Manchester, M4 1HQ map

  • Respected as one of the best cocktail bars outside of london, manchester’s Socio Rehab is a hidden gem in the heart of the northern quarter. As it only advertises itself with a small name plaque on the door, you may have unwittingly walked past this great experience.  If you spend the time looking however (its right next door to it’s sister bar rodeo, opposite bluu) you’ll be rewarded and pleasantly surprised.  It’s part of the rulesyou have to have a cocktail, thats what this place is about, but this can cause a wait at the bar on busy weekend nights. if you are not sure what to try, ask the very knowledgeable and friendly barstaff who will expertly create a little piece of heaven in a glass. The bar is tiny, and there is not much seating but the music is good and the atmosphere is friendly.

The ShakespeareThe Shakespeare 16 Fountain Street, Manchester, M2 2AA map

  • The spectacular looking Shakespeare, just off manchester’s market street, originated in chester but was moved to manchester sometime in the 1920’s. the exterior gives an impression of a real old world pub, the inside has been chopped and changed over the years and now is quite dark. The bar is quite reasonable and there are a few real ales on offer, there are some imported bottle lagers on offer too.  Popualr with shoppers and office workers alike, they also offer traditional pub grub, with a roast being the special on sundays. A great jukebox and a number of tvs allow the drinker to spend a great couple of hours in this friendly city centre pub.

  • One of manchesters small traditional pubs, the seven oaks is right in the heart of china town. The cream tiled exteria stands out in this back street, the interior is everything you would expect as well. This is a beer pub and as well as their regular draughts of boddies and tetley they have the occasional guest ale. Popular with the office workers from the nearby Mosley Steet, there is a welcoming atmosphere in here and the regulars are a friendly bunch.  If it gets too crowded in the small downstairs bar, then you may find room upstairs in their function room.

The Star and GarterThe Star and Garter The Star and Garter, 18 -20 Fairfield Street, Manchester, M1 2QF map

  • Known as the home of indie music in manchester, the star and garter is a great place to see new bands. The pub is set over two floors, downstairs is the bar and upstairs is the club venue. If you like slumming it, then you will love the star and garter, its not a place to take your gran, its rough around the edges and doesn’t care, which is quite refreshing. There are a number of beers and spirits behind the bar, but nothing to surprise. The upstairs venue is home to some great club nights, where the music is very manchester orientated.

SimpleSimple  44 Tib Street, Manchester, M4 1LA map

  • Simple, as simple says, is simple. The menu is graced with a mix of british classics and some more modern inventions. The bar is straightforward, although there’s a good selection of import beers and they have a great cocktail menu to boot.  Surrounded by specialist record shops and close to Affleck’s Palace, the atmosphere is chilled and it is a great hang out to catch up with friends.  The concept was so succesful they opened a second venue on Chapel Walks, called Simple In The City, which has since made way for a Mediterranean cocktail and tapas bar.

Sensations Lounge November 24, 2006

Judas LoungeSensations Lounge 2 Old Bank Street, Manchester, M2 7PF map

  • You’ll find Sensations Lounge in the alleyway between St. Annes Square and Cross Street, the one with the big concrete balls made famous by a semi-naked Jimmy Nesbitt running away from a gigantic boucing testical in Cold Feet.  Apart from the management, very little has changed since it’s name change from Judas Lounge and it still offers the wonderful sumptuous seating.  It’s a great place to escape from the hordes of shoppers or grab a pre-show drink, with the Royal Exchange Theatre next door.  Sensations has a fair selection of drinks and cocktails with a small food menu offering bar snacks throughout the day.  The property seems to be rather ill-fated as the likes of The Rat & Parrot, The Colour Bar, the Yatra Lounge and The Judas Lounge having all come and gone.  The Conservatory and Bar 5 which once stood opposite have also disappeared.  Hopefully the new owner’s can have better luck.

The SalisburyThe Salisbury 2 Wakefield Street, Manchester, M1 5NE map

The Salisbury is a great pub just off Oxford Road by the side of the Oxford Road railway station arch’s. The pub offers a really great range of cask ales, serves food and has a nice outside drinking area for those summer months. Being at the bottom of the steps leading to the station, the clientele is a real mixed bag; you can expect to see everyone from rockers to goths, young students to older businessmen. The jukebox is also regarded as one of the best in town and along with the real ales is one of the reasons this place is so popular.

Sir Ralph Abercromby

Sir Ralph Abercromby InnSir Ralph Abercromby Inn 35 Bootle Street, Manchester, M2 5GU map

  • Manchester offers lots of traditional pubs like this one; just off the beaten track and hidden away, but if you know where they are then you’ve found yourself a little belter! The Sir Ralph Abercromby sits on Bootle Street next to Manchester city centre’s police station.  It can be found four ways: You can walk down either end of Bootle Street (accessed from Deansgate next to 42nd Street Nightclub or from Southmill Street behind Baby Grand nightclub), you can sneak through the little passageway on Peter Street (in between Bedlam and the Army & Navy Recruitment Office) or you could take the less recommended option of getting on the wrong side of the law anywhere within the city centre, getting taken in a van to the Bootle Street cells, and then popping in after they’ve bailed you (make sure you get your shoelaces back first).  Named after the British lieutenant-general noted for his services during the Napoleonic Wars (no Manchester connection), they offer cask ales and food. So step away from the binge-drinker full bars on Peter Street and experience a traditional Manchester ale house.

Sugar Lounge

Sugar LoungeSugar Lounge Deansgate Locks, Manchester, M1 5LH map

  • Sugar Lounge opened on the Locks a few years ago, an exclusive bar in Manchester catering for those lucky sod’s who had American Express black cards, tailor made designer suits and earning more in savings account interest each year than the rest of us receive as a salary. They had an expensive membership scheme and a strict guest list door policy. It was proudly highly pretentious and even the doormen wore tailored Versace or Hugo Boss uniforms. In reality though, most people with Amex Black cards (especially the footballers) can’t afford to be regularly snapped out on the town and most punters were probably spending more in credit card interest than they were earning as a wage. As with all these types of bars, membership schemes only work for a year or two until the next exclusive bar comes along. And whilst it may have hosted private parties for the likes of David Beckham, Justin Timberlake, Cameron Dias, Kylie Minogue and Robbie Williams, it also became just as well known for its attraction to the ‘street’ crowd. It was no surprise that the venue closed down in December 2005 after less than 3 years. In fairness, the rent on a property like this must be horrendous and with such small space inside (it’s the smallest of all the bars on Deansgate Locks), the owners must have been hard pushed to make a real profit out of it. This was notoriously reflected in the drinks prices too.

Sugar Lounge eventually re-opened in June 2006 under new management (rumoured to be a Premiership footballer) and has changed all its policies, although thankfully not the interior, drastically. Gone is the gangster-friendly r’n’b in favour of cool soulful house music. Also gone is the pretentious guest list in favour of a more friendly “you look smart enough, come in and enjoy yourself” attitude. It’s a welcome change and hopefully the new management will be rewarded for such a move because this is still one of the classiest bars in town!
