Peveril Of The PeakPeveril Of The Peak 127 Great Bridgewater Street, Manchester, M1 5JQ map

  • The Peveril Of The Peak could arguably be Manchester’s most famous pub. This distinctive looking traditional pub has also been a haven for many a celeb, with the likes of Eric Cantona and Robbie Coltrane being regular visitors. Sat awkwardly on a triangular piece of land on the corner of Great Bridgewater Street, the amazing two tone green brick work and roof top washing line makes it one of Manchester’s best loved landmarks. ‘The Pev’, as it’s referred to by many Mancunians, has a fine selection of real ales and beers and even offers a pool table and a traditional table football machine with the soundtrack provided by the excellent jukebox, crammed full of the more famous Manc bands.

  • Named in recognition of the newspaper printers that was once The Printworks, Paparazzi is a relatively small basement club which gets very busy (and very hot) at the weekends. the music is loud and the drinks flow freely, often creating an electric atmosphere. the bar prices are a little on the high side, but to the majority of regulars this doesn’t matter, as they love this club, whatever the cost of a drink.

Café ParadisoCafé Paradiso Rossetti Hotel, 107 Piccadilly, Manchester, M1 2DB map

  • Located in the funky and informal Rossetti Hotel, next to Piccadilly Station, Café Paradiso is frequented by business people and hotel guests, offering a great menu in a delightful setting. The bar is well stocked, with a large selection of reasonably priced cocktails, and the staff very friendly and welcoming. The food is Mediterranean in style and can be served either in the bar or the very plush restaurant. Come the evening however and all this changes as the mood lighting takes effect and the restaurant is packed out with Manchester’s great and good. Unfortunately, the excellent night club downstairs has now closed.

  • A haunt for Manchester city supporters, the Piccadilly offers a number of cask ales along with the usual beers, lager and cider. Almost an exact replica of the Wetherspoons a few doors down (which is popular with United supporters), it was previously called The Piccadilly Tavern and at one time, The Goose.  There is a typical bar menu and the food is basic yet reasonably priced.

Piccadilly 21Piccadilly 21 21 Piccadilly Gardens, Manchester, M1 1LU map

  • In early summer 2006 Piccadilly 21 reopened with a refurbished interior to delightful roars from the regular steadfast crowd. Once the home to the pill popping manchester generation the music is still commerial dance and club chart dance mixed with clubland classics and some R&B to boot. this is a large club open on the weekends and has four bars spred through two rooms, allowing for musical differences and there is a dancefloor in each. There is a strict door policy of no sportswear and this has not gone down too well with some of the oldschool. A very popular club at the weekend, and it does get very, very busy, fear not however, there are always plenty of staff on so you’ll always be able to get a drink at the bar.

Paddy’s GoosePaddy’s Goose Paddy’s Goose, 29 Bloom Street, Manchester, M1 3JE map

  • A traditional pub hidden behind Canal Street, ‘the famous’ Paddys Goose is worth a visit if you have never been in a traditional British pub before – especially if you’re travelling on one of the many coaches that stop at the Chorlton Street and Sackville Street coach stations opposite.  The décor and style are dated and have not been messed with. The bar staff are friendly but to an occasional visitor it may seem like you are stepping into the pub in the american werewolf in london. The foods good and there are some nice cask ales on offer.

ProhibitionProhibition 2-10 St Mary’s Street, Manchester, M3 2LB map

  • Prohibition is the sister bar to the Living Room and is located just off Deansgate down the side of House Of Fraser (or Kendals as its known to most Mancunians) in the venue that once held the likes of Bar 10 and Bar Coast.  The name was taken from 1920’s America when alcohol was illegal and had to be smuggled into the country from Mexico.  The mixing of flavours and liquors was needed to hide the taste of the inferior booze creating the ‘Cocktail’.  Prohibition focuses on the art of cocktail making and shooters and is a great place to sample some of the best in town.

In an almost unwelcoming 70’s style shopping precinct, many people choose to walk past, however step inside and you’ll find a big screen TV showing sports, a pool table and all day food.  It’s a popular place to hang out when you’ve finished or skipped your lectures! Po Na NaPo Na Na 42 Charles Street, Manchester, M1 7DB map

Po Na Na is a Manchester bar that many people may not have seen.  Located just off Oxford Road, alongside the BBC studios, around the corner from the Palace Theatre and Gay Village, this Moroccan themed club is quietly indicated by just a small plaque on the door.  Those that do know of it, can often be found queuing along the street to catch well known guest DJ’s like Mani (the Stone Roses and Primal Scream) and Huey (Fun Lovin Criminals) playing funk, r’n’b, hip hop, soul, salsa, drum’n’bass and disco.  The decor is typically Moroccan with bed-like seating, low hanging fabric from the ceiling, candle light, terracotta walls and floor to ceiling columns.  Like the fantastic Balearica jazz bar that stood here many years before, it’s a great place to chill out in a bar that’s different to the usual Manchester scene.
