Odder December 14, 2006

OdderOdder Odder, 14 Oxford Road, Manchester, M1 5QA map

  • The creators of northern quarter favourite, odd bar, have snapped up the oxford road premises vacated by zumbar, to bring us odder.  This is a great addition to this bustling area of Manchester and is popular with students, workers at the BBC opposite and visitors to The Dancehouse Theatre next door.  The theme to the bar is ecclectic to say the least, the décor is refreshing and adds to a very warm atmosphere. Two rooms make up the new venue, and it has been completely changed since it was zumbar, with the space being utilised more sensibly.  With a full range of drinks on offer and the same friendly, relaxed attitude we’ve come to expect from the staff at odd, odder is set to be a great success.

The Old Monkey

The Old MonkeyThe Old Monkey  90-92 Portland Street, Manchester, M1 4GX map

  • A Joseph Holts owned traditional working class pub, the old monkey is deceptivly large inside, whether you drink downstairs or upstairs the atmosphere is the same, this is a traditional pub with friendly staff and the manchester brewed holt’s beers.  One of the great things about Joey Holt’s pubs was their prices.  Whilst these have gradually increased over the years, they are still extremely cheap.  If you want a pint of true northern beer then grab a pint of Joesph Holts bitter, a unique taste which goes down extremely easily and after about six pints magically makes your legs disappear, this can be troublesome if you then visit the toilets for the first time, as they seem to be located in a different postcode!

Orchid Lounge Karaoke Bar

Orchid Lounge Karaoke BarOrchid Lounge Karaoke Bar  54 Portland Street, Manchester, M1 4QU map

  • ”I should be so lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky”, “I did it my way” and “dancing queen, young and sweet, only seventeen” are all words that you’ll hear in the orchid lounge, although it’s not exactly called singing! Situated up a staircase directly above the orchid lounge restaurant on portland street, this bar could easily be missed if you didn’t know it was there. The bar is tiny, but get a good group of freinds together, get very drunk and go for the laugh. There isn’t a great choice of beer although there’s loads of spirits and the staff look after you well.  If karaoke is your thing then this is definitely a bar you should visit.

OverdraughtOverdraught 121 Princess Street, Manchester, M1 7AG map

  • Whilst Overdraught is located just a short distance from Manchester’s Gay Village, it’s a world apart from the finely polished bars that you’ll find in the Village.  Popular with students, it’s a dark indie rock bar mostly used as a pre-club boozer for 5th Avenue which is located underneath.  It temporarily changed names in 2005 to Rendevous, only to reappear as Overdraught in 2006.

O’Sheas Irish Bar

O'SheasO’Sheas Irish Bar 80 Princess Street, Manchester, M1 6NF map

  • O’Sheas is Manchester’s most popular Irish Bar.    There’s a wide choice of beers on offer and you can expect the head on your Guinness to come complete with a perfectly formed clover leaf or harp. They offer a choice of Irish dishes at reasonable prices, and the jukebox boasts many Irish favourites with a very strong pressence of Manc Irish artists including Michael McGoldrick, Dezi Donnelly, Toss The Feathers, Culainn and The Bogtrotters.  Not that the jukebox is switched on that often… on most nights there’s live entertainment to jig along to as Mancunian Irish bands play celtic favourites and classic pop hits.  Folk legends Toss The Feathers were regulars here.   They also show loads of football and Gaelic sports, Manchester United and Celtic are given preference for obvious reasons.  Everyone seems to have a great craic in here.
  • Live Music (celtic)
  • Food (Irish)
  • Live Sports (Sky, Setanna, ITV, BBC etc – preference to Man Utd, Celtic, Ireland and gaelic football)
  • popular with Manchester United fans

  • The Old Grapes is a traditional pub located just around the corner from the Opera House Theatre, which means that this place gets full of people waiting to go in to the theatre as well as tourists and shoppers. It serves lots of nice beers and the decor is enhanced by the signed photo’s of stars from around the world. The OX

The OXThe OX 71 Liverpool Road, Castlefield, Manchester, M3 4NQ map

  • Dating as far back as 1804 in it’s previous guise as The Oxnoble, The Ox is a great little pub and restaurant opposite the Museum of Science & Industry in Castlefield.  Don’t be put off by the rather uninviting boarded windows, on the inside you’ll find a warm and inviting atmosphere, sumptuous sofa’s and traditional old world pub style, offering good beers and great food.  Winner of the Independent Newspaper Gastro Pub of the Year 2005, it’s a pub well worth checking out.  Outside is a very small seating area for a few people to soak up the sun (not that Manchester gets much).  Being close to Granada Studios, you’ll also find the occassional star in here, reading their scripts or enjoying a pint after filming.

Opus OneOpus One Radisson Edwardian Hotel, Free Trade Hall, Peter Street, Manchester, M2 3NQ  map

  • Opus One is the plush cocktail bar and restaurant inside the Radisson Edwardian Hotel, arguably the best 5 star hotel in Manchester.  Open to non-residents, access is via the hotel’s Peter Street entrance, it has an intimate relaxing feel to it and you can watch the world (and your money) pass by.  Despite it’s somewhat seedy dark red and black colour scheme, it’s known to be one of the best Manhatten-style Cocktail lounges around, also offering fine wines and food to match the hotel’s 5 star rating.

One Central StreetOne Central Street 1 Central Street, Manchester, M2 5WR map

  • One Central Street (Formerly The Number One) is one of Manchester’s finest clubs and as a result has hosted many exclusive aftershow parties.  Situated in the basement of a beautiful Grade II listed building near the Town Hall, it’s a backstreet nightclub which attracts an exlectic mix of clubbers.  Run by ex-Hacienda manager Leroy Richardson, it’s the home to some of the best club nights in town, including Bugged Out and Ace Of Spades, playing funky house and disco.  The award-winning bar is plush and offers a great choice of cocktails.  Like the Hac, there’s no strict dress code (jeans and trainers allowed) and they claim to attract people with a bit more individuality than the norm.  As was also the case with the Hacienda though, the doormen are notorious for being selective and you can expect to be made to queue for prolonged periods.

  • Obsidian is the trendy bar and restaurant in the basement of the Arora Hotel. The interior of the bar is quite stunning with a mirrored bar at one end, jazzy blue overhead strip lights, wooden floors and button back booths. The bar area has been almost totally separated from the restaurant area making for two different experiences.  Obsidian is one of Manchesters finest cocktail bars and whilst the prices reflect this, it’s definitely worth forking out to give them a try.

Odd Bar November 2, 2006

Odd Bar ManchesterOdd Bar 30-32 Thomas Street, Northern Quarter, Manchester, M4 1ER map

  • Odd Bar is in one of Manchester’s most up and coming areas, the Northern Quarter. Inside it is decorated in a very bohemian style which seems to have rubbed off on most of it’s clientele! Odd is free from some of the usual people you see around Manchester those you’d like to stay away from, but it is very unpretentious and a great place to relax with beers from around the world and food that’s a quirkily fabulous as the decor. Also has a great jukebox with many Manc tunes.

Dating back to 1550, The Old Wellington pub is a Grade Two listed building which is reputed to be one of Manchester’s oldest buildings.
