The NorthernThe Northern 56 Tib Street, Manchester, M4 1LW map

  • What was previously one of the roughest pubs in the city, is now one of the friendliest and trendiest pubs. The Northern is a celebration of all things Mancunian. It’s artisitcally decorated with the who’s who of famous local heroes from everyone from Tony Wilson to Les Dawson. With its excellent music and relaxing atmosphere, if you’re in the Northern Quarter, The Northern is a must visit. Even the smokers are invited to socialise in “The Pit”, an outside enclosed area which feels part of the pub.

North January 2, 2007

NorthNorth Church Street, Under Afflecks Palace, Manchester, M1 1JG map

  • Situated under Afflecks Palace, North is a basement club which hosts a number of manchester club nights. The bar is well stocked and an entrance fee normally applies. The club itself, refitted in Summer 2006, has a great layout and has plenty of room both on the dancefloor and in the seated chill out room. Attracting some of the biggest DJ names, this venue has been popular for sometime yet it’s surprising that it is still a relatively well kept secret. Every night offers something different and the music is ecclectic, usually focusing on old and new school house, trance, drum’n’bass, funky latino and acid jazz classics.

Night and Day December 15, 2006

Night and DayNight and Day Cafe  26 Oldham Street, Manchester, M1 1JN map

  • Probably the best venue in manchester for checking out up and coming live bands, night and day café has great rock and roll coming out of its ears. Not only do they play host to some great gigs, they also have a fabulous range of spirits, a few draught beers, cans and bottles galore. The atmosphere is frendly, people go there to listen to the music, but if you head there during the day, you can chill out with a pint and some food. The inside is reminiscent of some small louisiana backwater bar. kinda cool, often with music to match.

The Lord Nelson HotelThe Lord Nelson Hotel  88 Newton Street, Manchester, M1 1EE map

  • This old fashioned Ancoats pub on Newton Street in the Northern Quarter isn’t as popular as many of the other traditional pubs nearby.  With many of its Great Ancoats Street neighbours closing down, most recently the Lord Attenby, it will be interesting to see if this place benefits from new trade or follows suit.

NapoleonsNapoleons Napoleons, 35 Bloom Street, Manchester, M1 3LY map

  • Claiming to be the oldest bar in the village, Napoleons is often being updated. The latest installment offers three floors of hot and sweaty club that is always extremely popular. You will often find a great number of transvestites in here and that is probably because it is a very friendly and welcoming place, and they get in for free. The rest of us have to pay.  The music can be anything from 80’s cheese to chilled out dance.

Norwegian Blue ManchesterNorwegian Blue The Printworks, Withy Grove, Manchester, M4 2BS map

  • Norwegian Blue is one of the most popular bars inside The Printworks getting very busy over the weekend and has a nice chilled out vibe during the week where you can sit back enjoy a coffee, beer or cocktail. The drink prices are quite reasonable and they have lots of different drinks promotions many of which run all day and night, it’s easily a place where you can make a full night of it.  Don’t be fooled by the name though – it’s hardly Norwegian!
