La TascaLa Tasca 132 The Orient, The Trafford Centre, Manchester, M17 8EG map

Another manchester first, la tasca is now a chain of tapas bars that you will find all accross the country. it all started here though and the opening of la tasca brought a new drinking and dining experience to mancunians in the 90s. the spanish themed menu offers good food at a reasonable price. While it is more of a place to eat, Las Tasca has a selection of wines and beers and the Spanish favorite Sangria!

Las Iguanas is part of a chain of Latin restaurants and bars throughout the UK. It focuses more on the restaurant offering food with Latin-American Indian, Spanish, Portuguese and African influences. Their signature dish is Xinxim, Brasilian lime chicken said to be Pele’s favourite! As well as this Las Iguanas also offers a bar area called ‘Cachaca’ (a spirit distilled from sugar cane and sells more than vodka worldwide!), perfect for pre or post dinner drinks, or you could lounge about with a cocktail and some tapas. COCKTAIL SUGGESTION – Try out the amazing Caipirinha Cocktail!

Lotus Bar and Dim Sum January 12, 2007

Lotus Bar & Dim SumLotus Bar & Dim Sum 35a King Street, Manchester, M2 6AA map

  • Bringing a welcome change to the typical eateries and drinkeries in manchester, Lotus Bar offers a great range of both drink and food.  This stylish offering from The Yang Sing, is nestled between the designer stores on King Street and as a result is popular during the day.  With outside seating, behind the wonderful St Ann’s Church it also makes a great place to rest those tired feet in the summer.  There’s a great choice of dim sum available for you to enjoy whilst sipping one of the many cocktails, spirits or champagnes and, as you’d expect from the Yang Sing, it’s very tasty.

The River BarThe River Bar The Lowry Hotel, 50 Dearmans Place, Chapel Warf , Salford, M3 5LH map

  • Situated in Rocco Forte’s exclusive Lowry Hotel, the River Bar along with the very long terrace offer excellent views over the river irwell. Being a 5 star hotel bar you can expect excellent service, a great range of drinks and some super cocktails. one of the only places in Manchester (or Salford to be precise, as its on the opposite side of the Irwell), to still offer a full traditional afternoon tea (with champagne of course). The River Bar and Terrace also offer a lite lunch menu, however if you would prefer something a little more substantial then the traditional British and Fusion specialities of the River Restaurant are ideal. There is entertainment and live music most evenings and on occasional sunday afternoons.

LegendsLegends Legends, 4-6 Whitworth Street, Manchester, M1 3QW map

  • With names like ‘Dorothy’s Bar’, the ‘Mineshaft’ and the ‘Tunnel Bar’ it is clear to see why Legends is a male gay bar. These unusual names are given to parts of the extensive nightclub, which is quite literally a maze of great sized rooms. Legends is currently home to some of manchesters hottest gay club nights such as ‘homoelectric’ and ‘bollox’. Open every Saturday and some Fridays and Sundays, legends is definitely worthwhile a visit if you fancy a stroll out of the village.

Lammars December 18, 2006

LammarsLammars Fourways House, Hilton Street, Manchester, M1 2EF map

  • Nestled in the back streets between the Northern Quarter and Piccadilly Station, Lammars is a deceptively large lounge bar and restaurant, well worth visiting. Boasting lush decor that some might see as being a little camp, that should come as no surprise really as Lammars is named after Manchester’s favourite drag queen, Frank Foo Foo Lammar, who tragically lost his battle against cancer in 2003. (Frank’s own Foo Foo’s Palace was also located at the end of the road opposite). The bar offers a reasonable range of draught and bottle beers and spirits, whilst there are a few good wines available and cocktails too. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed and it really is the ideal place to eat and drink.

Late LoungeLate Lounge  4 Oldham Street, Manchester, M1 1JQ map

  • A cute little bar in the heart of the northern quarter on the site previously occupied by bar code and squizzy taylor’s. There are are good range of drinks on offer here, and lots of imported lager. The menu is simple, traditional and snack like. Late Lounge is a sometimes venue for live music, comedy and the like although this has become more infrequent, they do however still have a dj on a Friday and Saturday night who spins some top tunes.  It’s currently closed for refurbishment.

The Lord Nelson HotelThe Lord Nelson Hotel  88 Newton Street, Manchester, M1 1EE map

  • This old fashioned Ancoats pub on Newton Street in the Northern Quarter isn’t as popular as many of the other traditional pubs nearby.  With many of its Great Ancoats Street neighbours closing down, most recently the Lord Attenby, it will be interesting to see if this place benefits from new trade or follows suit.

  • One of Manchester’s hidden gems. This unassuming building houses one of the most celebrated, luxurious, glamourous restaurants and bars in the city centre.  The sense of exclusivity in Lounge 10 is unbelievable with the décor straight out of the moulin rouge and the atmosphere equally electrifying.  The selection of wines is second to none and the menu is both indulgent and stylish.  This is a very special bar to take a very special someone for a very special night!

Label November 24, 2006

LabelLabel 78 Deansgate, Manchester, M3 2FW map

  • Label is a funky, trendy bar on Deansgate offering comfy and cool surroundings to enjoy a drink and maybe one of their lovely cocktails. Surprisingly for a place of this calibre it is attitude free, you will see your up market city folk and even the odd celeb but as long as you are smart casual you should be welcome to soak up the atmosphere of this funky bar. As well as the bar Label also serves food (British and Mediterranean) and has a happening lounge bar and club downstairs for those coming in later on in the evening.  Interestingly, Label is in the building (previously occupied by Bar Med) where Living Ventures started with the celebrity crammed JW Johnson’s in 1993.   The company has gone on to produce Mancunian exports Life Cafe, The Living Room, Restaurant Bar & Grill and Est Est Est amongst others.

Life CafeLife Cafe 23 Peter Street, Manchester, M1 4DJ  map

  • Life Cafe, and its basement live music venue, The Late Room, is a real gem at the Deansgate end of Peter Street, attracting a more discerning clientelle than Squares and Brannigans which sit either side of it.  It’s a great cocktail bar with plenty of seating and a large dance floor, which also doubles up as a standing area for when the big name bands play their more exclusive intimate gigs here (and there’s been many like Alanis Morissette, Beautiful South, The Corrs, James Blunt, Stereophonics, Jamie Cullum, the Fun Lovin’ Criminals, Craig David and a whole host of Manchester bands to name but a few).  The basement bar, The Late Room, offers a smaller staging area with a regular line up of International jazz, folk, blues and soul stars as well as smaller indie bands and local talent.

Once, Manchester’s trendiest bar, it’s kept it’s reputation for being expensive with strict doormen although no longer enjoys the queues which once stretched down Whitworth Street West. Lava Cafe BarLava Cafe Bar Middle Warehouse, Castlequay, Castlefield, Manchester, M15 4NT map

  • Next door to Manchesters Key 103 & Piccadilly radio stations is Lava Cafe Bar, a great chilled out little bar with a Mediterranean feel to it. Offering drinks at great prices and a fanastic food menu which includes the famous Hot Rock’s, allowing you to cook your own steak, chicken or swordfish at your table on a hot volcanic rock (not to be missed).  There’s a great pizza menu, with the volcanic theme continuing, each pizza named after a famous Volcano.  The toppings reflect the regional cuisine of it’s location and there’s even an amazing Arthur’s Seat Pizza, with a Scottish topping of haggis and black pudding.  The staff are very friendly and the roaring fire is very welcoming… albeit it’s on a large flatscreen lcd television screen.  It’s popular with the gay crowd and being next door to Key 103 there’s often big name popstars or celebrity DJ’s enjoying a drink here, including Justin Moorhouse (Phoenix Nights).  Take That’s Jason Orange, Radio 2 DJ Mike Harding and a number of Coronation Street stars all have apartments upstairs, and that’s where you’ll also find the ManchesterBars.com office!

  • The Living Room is a classy upmarket restaurant and bar situated on Deansgate.  Replicating it’s wonderful sister bar, JW Johnson’s, which once sat next door, this was the first in the now national chain and has been popular with celebs and wealthy Mancunians since 1999.  Weekends are very busy and a strict door policy is often in place.  Weekdays are a little more relaxed without losing any of the pretense.  Drinks can be expensive but that’s easy to forgive for an experience as good as this!
