GrinchGrinch 5 – 7 Chapel Walks, Manchester, M2 1HN map

  • Since opening a few years back, grinch has been one of the most popular wine bars in manchester. Being situated in the heart of the city centre means that at lunch time the clientele is a mix of shoppers, office workers and business types. In summer it boasts popular outside seating and if you time it just right to enjoy their great happy hour promotions (between 5 and 7pm every day!) you can sample one of their cocktails and have a pizza. Owned by the same people as the local Felicini pizzerias, Grinch is also a great venue for an early evening drink or a pre theatre meal, being situated round the corner from the royal exchange. You can also have a boogie in their downstairs bar.

Gullivers December 16, 2006

GulliversGullivers 109 Oldham Street, Manchester, M4 1LE map

  • Gullivers is a deceptivly large traditional pub with a relaxed atmosphere. There is a limited choice of cask ales, and the bar prices are what you would expect. Inside you might be lucky, or unlucky, enough to catch some of the locals at one of their regular karaoke sessions, if that’s not your thing, then why not have a game of pool.  Down the side of Gulliver’s, you can also find a short cut to some of the more fashionable bars on Tib Street and deeper into the Northern Quarter.

Grey Horse Inn December 14, 2006

Grey Horse InnGrey Horse Inn  80 Portland Street, Manchester, M1 4QX map

  • Not quite claiming the title of manchester’s smallest pub (that honour goes to the circus tavern, a few doors down), the grey horse inn is still tiny. A traditional real ale manchester ‘local’ you will find all sorts of friendly characters drinking here. Although it is a local, visitors are still very warmly greated by the landlord and the beer is excellent, both in choice and value. In this day of trendy lifestyle bars its great to see a good quality real pub frequented by real people, the grey horse is a must visit pub for people wanting to experience a traditional mancunian drinking institution.

The patrons are usually younger than most of the places around Manchester and being next to the UMIST campus and a stone’s throw from Oxford Road, it attracts a fair share of students looking for reasonably priced drinks to spend their student loan on.  The pool table, fruit machines and pinball all add to the draw of this fun laid back pub.
