AXMAXM bar   10 Canal Street, Manchester, M1 3EZ map

  • The award winning AXM bar claims to offer more than any other bar in the village. It’s a fabulous venue, with a great atmosphere and some of the best staff around. the contemporary style is fresh and clean. They’ve got one of the best video jukeboxes in town, and internet access is available either via wifi or one of their terminals. You’ll also find an event here every night and a great range of drinks promotions are available. Whilst it is relaxed, it does have quite a strict door policy.  AXM has replaced Autobahn and previously the original Bar 38 on Canal Street.

Arts Bar and Grill December 14, 2006

Arts Bar and GrillArts Bar and Grill Arts Bar and Grill, Piccadilly Hotel, Portland Street, Manchester, M1 4PH map

  • Arts Bar, situated inside manchesters piccadilly hotel, is a throwback to the hayday of the 1970’s. This bar tends to be full of business types during the week and party goers at the weekend. When there is a sports event in the city centre, for example boxing, arts becomes very very busy and unless you are a resident at the hotel you may struggle to get in. Although the outside of the piccadilly hotel is very dated , almost shabby looking, the interior of the bar is surprisingly pleasant. The drinks prices are typically ‘hotel’ high, but in order to compensate they do have a good food menu, and service is usually speedy.
  • 70’s decor

Athenaeum November 28, 2006

The Athenaeum ManchesterThe Athenaeum 1 York Street, Manchester, M1 7DE map

  • A real party bar, Athenaeum has had its ups and downs over the years however has been ever present whilst the more exclusive bars and restaurants that surround it have come and gone.  Located at the top of King Street, on the corner of Spring Gardens and York Street, it’s only a stone’s throw from the shops on both Market Street and King Street, whilst also being close to the Town Hall and China Town.  It’s a large hall of a venue boasting marble statues and columns with an impressive looking bar.  The clientele can be a real mix, from hen nights to office parties and the drinks flow quickly with a number of promotions also available.  Food is also available.

Club Alter Ego (formerly Mutz Nutz and Equinox, home of Manumission) opened in September 2006 after a £250,000 refit. Arq November 9, 2006

ArqArq Arch 9, Deansgate Locks, Whitworth Street, Manchester, M1 5LH map

  • Arq is the latest bar on Manchester’s Deansgate Locks, located on the doomed spot vacated by the likes of Lock Bar (or Prada Society Cafe as they cheekily originally tried to name it), ‘The’ Bar, If Bar and Arch 9. They’ve tried a different approach to their predecessors, of which, let’s face it, only The Lock Bar got truely right (what a classy bar that was!). Friday, Saturday and Sunday sees the venue turned into a nightclub mixing chart hits, funky house and r’n’b over the 2 levels. ARQ IS CURRENTLY CLOSED!!!

Aqua November 8, 2006

AquaAqua Albion Wharf, Albion Street, Manchester, M1 5LN map

  • Aqua is just around the corner from Deansgate Locks and a stone’s throw from the Bridgewater Hall. It’s a small basement club with a great laid back atmosphere, cheesy music, welcome drink prices, and comfortable sofas overlooking the canal. Having recently undergone refurbishment, there’s a nice sized dance floor to boogie on and it’s a whole world away from the more pretentious venues across the road at Deansgate Locks. Previously known as Ned Kelly’s and Cheerleaders when the Hacienda stood proudly next door, Aqua still remains popular as people take advantage of its early bird drink offers and late night license.

Atlas ManchesterAtlas 376 Deansgate, Manchester, M3 4LY map

  • Located in a railway arch just under Deansgate train station is Atlas. An unpretentious bar full of the cool city crowd. It always manages to have a great atmosphere no matter what time of the day or night you go. Popular with musicians and celebs looking to escape the more obvious choices around town, it also has a great sun terrace at the back, brilliant for those lazy summer days and warm summer nights. This funky laid back bar is definitely worth checking out.
