The New Union is a popular bar and club on the corner of Canal Street and Princess Street.  A friendly mixed gay bar, they’ve managed to keep the traditional public house feel in the older part of the pub while the newer club area has been designed to get people moving, offering a great atmosphere to help you let your hair down. With entertainment throughout the week, highlights include the ‘Showgirls’ drag queens and male strippers on Sundays.

  • Gay bar (gay friendly hetrosexuals welcome)
  • Disco (cheesy pop and chart)
  • Entertainment (male strippers, drag queens, quiz nights)
  • Karaoke nights
  • Dress code:  No hats
  • Opening Hours:  Mon-Sat 11am-2am / Sun 12am-12:30am

Really disappointed in the New Union. Went there one night with a straight female friend, a gay male friend and of course myself (I’m bi) and was turned away by the bouncers because of my straight female friend. Hetrosexuals and bi-sexuals were certainly not welcome that night.

i was at the union thre friday just gone and we was having a good time meet a couple of people and by the im straight myself and i got in no problem it got to about half one and my mates bag went missing we left on the sde of the stage next to a bouncer so we thought they would be safe but moments before the manager came up to my mate and said watch your bsg they might get robbed and she said to us that she watch the cam which was facing us all night and she said she saw nothing so if you go really watch your bag even tho that happen i would go again the music they play is the best out of the club because it doesn’t sound the same.

This is a bar from the past combined with a great night out. A venue that has almost everything.
I have been visiting The New Union for well over 40 (forty years). In the early years it was called “The Union”, the word “New” was added to the name after many internal and external changes. The front bar, as you enter from either Canal Street or from Princess Street, has remained basically very much the same over all those years. The other two bars have been added during extension work.

This is often referred to as a “Pink” venue and although there are many gay bars in The Gay Village the Union remains one of my favourite venues. I think that the clientèle here are a great mixture of everyone from this great metropolis. You can often see all of life’s great tapestry in this venue over a period of just one night, gay, bi, transgendered and all those in-between. The entertainment is there in the rear of the premises if you want to watch it and there is a area for chatting if you just want to watch life go by. There is even an old type “Snug Bar” which is a tiny place situated on the other side of the front bar and out of the way of the main area.
The New Union boasts hotel rooms above the bar and disco area from around £35.00 a night, the rooms are mainly en-suit but are not luxurious. It has a side entrance to the accommodation so there is no need to go through the main premises once you have checked in. The venue is handy for visiting all that the great night life of Manchester’s famous “Gay Village” has to offer.

I love this place, from a quiet early evening drink with mates, to dancing like a goon at 2am in the morning to the great drag djs playing modernish dance to camp and cheesy,
Never had a problem in there yet, and my straight mates love it too, in my opinion the staff and bouncers are great here, not like the more trendy attitude bars further up the canal.
    10/10 here

  8. dave Says:

Been goin there 4 abt 14 yrs; was second gay bar i ever visited in Manchester and felt ‘comfortable’ in there[no ‘attitude’ reqd],
I wouldn’t keep goin there if I didn’t like it! Also, a good ‘mix’ of people go there.
