Located on the first floor of The Orient, the Trafford Centre’s food court you’ll find Cafe Rouge. Brought to us by the same people that own the bella italia chain. The food is traditional, simple and french and of a good quality. As well as being a restaurant they also have a great selection of drinks and wine which can be ordered with table service. The emphasis is more on eating rather than drinking, but it makes for a nice place to have a quiet drink or chat around a table.

  • Situated at the bottom end of Liverpool Street, opposite the old Liverpool Street Station, the first railway station in the world, the commercial hotel is often overlooked.  this is a shame as it is a very friendly local pub.  There’s a homely feel to it with a roaring fire to keep you warm.  The bar has the usual range of pub drinks, real ale and a large projector screen showing the football.  The decor is traditional and one of the few pubs in manchester where you feel like you’ve stepped into someone’s front room.  Wonderful!

  • A City centre pub, the crown has its fair share of regulars, since the pool tables have gone, its not quite as popular as it was during the day but come the night time when the dj turns up, this place is popular as local party venue that is not quite night club and not quite trendy bar. The drinks on offer are the usual bar fillers, but there is always a drinks promotion on one sort or the other on offer, vodka and redbull anyone?

  • Without any doubt, chaophraya is a place to make you happy. From the moment you step foot in the door, you are made to feel special by one of the many superb waiters and waitresses with a traditional Thai greeting.   Although the upstairs restaurant is quickly earning the reputation as being the best in town, we’ll concentrate on the bar here. Firstly, lets talk about seating.  You can choose from luxurious leather sofa’s, high cocktail stools or the traditional Thai sunken seating; very traditional, very, very comfortable, and very, very, very tricky to get out of after you’ve tasted the delights of the bar.  There’s wonderful Thai cocktails on offer as well as the usual classics, a fantastic wine selection and some great Asian beers.  And whilst you soak up the ambience, expect another friendly waitress in traditional dress to provide you with a complimentary tray of snacks.  In short (it’s hard to be with this place), the decor is amazing, the music is subtle, the drinks fantastic and the service second to none.  Then of course, if you choose to venture upstairs, there’s the restaurant - not only amongst the best in Manchester, but arguably amongst the best in Britain!  Wow!

Circus TavernCircus Tavern - 86 Portland Street, Manchester, M1 4GX map

  • The Circus Tavern is a hidden gem, if you only have time to visit one real pub in manchester, make this the one. The reasons? Well, firstly it is manchester’s smallest pub, secondly they serve real ale, from real pumps and put it in real pint pots, and thirdly, anyone who is anyone in manchester’s sporting and television history has been in here at some point or another - as the photographs on the wall prove.  There are two tiny rooms inside, a front room with a bar which you actually walk into off the street, it’s that small, and a second room with some seating and tables. This bar is very friendly, not surprising when you consider that if you are drinking in there then you are probably sat on someone’s knee or stood on their toe. Well worth a visit!

  • One of a number of latin american themed bars to hit manchester in recent years, Che (pronounced ‘Shay’, as in Che Guevara) is one of, if not the best.  Where the rest have failed, Che succeeds with its mix of live Salsa music, good djs and great tapas.  Located on the edge of the Gay Village in the ill fated Portland Street venue that has seen the likes of Hugo Mash, am:pm, and huxter’s come and go.  Spread over two floors you’ll find there is a warm and lively atmosphere, which is complimented by the bright décor.  Fruit cocktails are a speciality and all are averagely priced. The food is superb and the upstairs restaurant elegantly decorated.  The happy hours offering 2 drinks for the price of 1 and a 3 course meal for £10 are extremely popular and you can often expect to queue two or three deep at the bar. If you’re up for a bit of fun then head along to Che’s popular salsa classes which are ran for both beginners and experts.  Excellent.

City Road InnCity Road Inn - 14 Albion Street, Manchester, M1 5NZ map

  • The City Road Inn, located opposite the spot where the Hacienda once stood, was the venue where many a Hac or Boardwalk punter started the night. This famous pub is a world away from the trendy bars which now sit alongside it on Deansgate Locks. With Sky Sports and a selection of real ales on offer, it’s a good place to watch the match, grab some pub grub or start your night before heading to the Bridgewater Hall or Deansgate Locks.
  • Live Sports (sky sports, bbc, itv etc)

The Comedy Store November 8, 2006

The Comedy StoreThe Comedy Store - Arches 3 & 4, Deansgate Locks, Whitworth Street West, Manchester, M1 5LH map

  • The Comedy Store is Manchester’s premier comedy club, hosting some of the biggest names in UK stand-up. Whilst you’ll need tickets to see the comedians on stage in the 500-seater auditorium, anyone can visit the bar or grab a bite to eat. The walls are lined with photo’s of famous comedians to have played the venue (and it’s elder London sister). And whilst the drinks aren’t the cheapest, it does have one of the most welcoming and upbeat atmospheres of any of the bars on The Locks. Before performances and during the interval, the bar can become extremely packed, particularly on a Saturday night when there are two performances (8pm and 11:30pm) and it’s often fun to people watch as some famous faces mingle amongst the crowds. When the comedians are on stage though, it gets a lot quieter as the masses takes to their seat and passers by probably don’t realise they can visit without a ticket. Down a spiral staircase, The Comedy Store also offers a more intimate seating area and a stage used for smaller shows and the occassional music concert.

Cloud 23Cloud 23 - The Hilton, Beetham Tower, 303 Deansgate, Manchester, M3 4LQ map

  • Cloud 23 is the swanky new bar on the 23rd floor of the controversial Beetham Tower. The highest bar in Manchester (with probably the highest drinks prices too) offers great views of Castlefield, Old Trafford, Salford Quays and beyond. With only a 200-person capacity and table service, expect to queue for a long time on the red carpet of the Hilton’s lobby as they take guests up in the express lift (Hilton guests have priority). Cocktails are delightfully named after songs by the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets and others (not that you’d find Ian Brown, Mani, Shaun Ryder, Bez or Clint Boon willing to pay those prices!)

  • Real Ale
  • Many imported German & Belgian Wheat beers + other rare European ales
