BacchanaliaBacchanalia - 15 – 17 Chapel Walks, Manchester, M2 1HN map

  • Named after the wild and mystic festivals to the greek god bacchus, bacchanalia is a trendy bar and restaurant in the heart of city centre manchester, taking the venue vacated by simple in the city. The downstairs bar is very popular at lunchtimes with the local business folk and shoppers, and when five o’clock comes you will very often find the same people walking through the same doors they walked out of just three and a half hours earlier. A little later on in the evening bacchanalia becomes a great venue for young lovers and you will often see them head upstairs to the mediterranean stlyed menus of the restaurant after having had an excellently prepared cocktail from the downstairs bar. Talking of the bar, there is an excellent speciality wine menu, some imported beers and over 150 cocktails to sample, so if you have the time, sit yourself down in one of the very plush leather booths and try the lot!

The BridgeThe Bridge - 58 Bridge Street, Manchester, M3 3BW map

  • Formerly the Bridge Street Tavern, and then the award winning gastro-pub, The Bridge, famous for serving traditional Lancashire dishes.  The pub is now been rebranded as the B Lounge at The Bridge and, by the same people who brought us the B Lounge at The Brunswick across town near Piccadilly Station, it has a new chef and menu.  Serving a range of traditional meals (albeit not the local cuisine it was previously famous for), The Bridge is a quiet little place in which to enjoy great food and a good selection of beers, with some real ales on offer. There is also a small area of outside seating available.

Bier KellerBier Keller - Manchester Bier Keller, 77 Piccadilly, Manchester, M1 2BU map

  • One of the few places in manchester that encourages you to stand on your chairs, manchester bier Keller (or ‘The Beer Keller’ as the sign outside says) is a great place for parties and large groups. Part of a small chain of clubs offering traditional style Oompah nights, the music is stereotypically German and the beer comes in very, very large pots - 2 litre Steins to be precise. Bier Keller now also offer gig nights on selected fridays and the venue is sometimes used in the day for pole dancing lessons!

Bar FringeBar Fringe - 8 Swan Street, Manchester, M4 5JN map

  • Not many people know about Bar fringe. It is a well kept secret at the top end of manchester’s northern quarter, maybe a little too far out for some to walk to during their nightly pub crawls. Like it’s sister bar, cask, the exterior tells you nothing of what you will find inside; a great range of fabulous imported beers and some real cask ale to boot. The music is provided by a very well stocked jukebox and there is both a pool table and a pinball machine. The regulars are a friendly bunch and the atmosphere is very, very relaxed. In the height of summer, why not head to the beer garden out the back and truly hide away from the crowds elsewhere in town.

The Bay HorseThe Bay Horse - 35-37 Thomas Street, Manchester, M4 1NA map

  • the interior of the bay horse is completely different to what you would expect from the exterior. For a start, it only looks small from the outside, yet inside there are two very large bar areas. Then, you might be thinking you were going to be stepping into an older worldy pub, but no, the interior is classy and modern. There is a great selection of wine and spirits behind the bar, and some good draught and bottled beers also and if you are peckish, they do have a few bar snacks on offer. The Brunswick December 18, 2006

The BrunswickThe Brunswick - The Brunswick, 97 Piccadilly, Manchester, M1 2DB map

  • The brunswick is a psuedo traditional pub just a stone’s throw from Piccadilly Station.  It was once a traditional pub (also called The Brunswick) before changing it’s name and appearance to Finnegan’s Wake, eventually reverting back to its original name.  Confusingly, it is also branded as the trendier sounding ‘b lounge’ which along with it’s sister bar B Lounge @ The Bridge is creating a new style of venue.  It has the usual range of drinks behind the bar and a couple of cask ales on offer and all are reasonably priced. The food is general standard pub grub, so if it’s a beer and a bar snack you require on your way to the station next door, then this is the place for you. There’s a large tv in the bar and the pub does get busy on match days. Also newly introduced are the live jazz nights held on a wednesday and the friday and saturday DJ spots.

The Birdcage December 14, 2006

The BirdcageThe Birdcage - Withy Grove, Manchester, M4 3QA map

  • In the days of the late great Foo Foo Lamaar, Manchester used to boast many cabaret clubs, however nothing quite in the style of the Birdcage. This vegas style club is an import from leeds and it has found its home just opposite the printworks. The target audience is stag and hen parties but this venue offers something for every group, no matter what the occasion. The décor is over the top, but in a way it has to be to compete with the costumes of the dancing girls, dancing boys and drag artists that appear regularly through the night. Once you are seated there is full table service throughout the night, but you don’t have to stay at your table, oh no, between acts you can take to the dancefloor as the dj spins some classic cheese from the 60’s, 70’s and 8o’s. The birdcage is indeed a party venue, and it brings a welcome return to the days when a night out meant a whole lot more.

BluuBluu - Smithfield Market, Thomas Street, Manchester, M4 1BD map

  • Bluu was one of the first trendy bars to open in the new area of the northern quarter focused around the redeveloped smithfield market.  Named after the original name of the famous Blue Note Jazz Club, it hit the scene in quite a big way in 2004, becoming popular with manchester’s great and good. The place itself is made up of three areas, the main bar with large panoramic windows, the dining section and the basement lounge. There are two menus available, a simple, typical bar menu and a fine dining a la carte menu. The service is good and the bar staff friendly although the drinks are a little bit pricey. The only downer is the doorstaff can sometimes make people queue outside when there doesn’t seem to be a reason to.

Barca December 9, 2006

BarcaBarca - Barca, 8 & 9 Catalan Square, Castlefield, Manchester, M3 4LZ map

  • In its heyday, Barca was ‘THE’ Manchester bar, owned by Simply Red’s Mick Hucknell in the days when the in-crowd flocked to Castlefield. More recently it’s been the victim of changing times. With the crowds flocking to Deansgate Locks, only 5 mins walk along the cobbles, or The Printworks and Northern Quarter on the other side of town, many of the other bars around this beautiful canalside setting paid the price and have remained derelict ever since. Barca however still remains and hopefully it can replicate the success of it’s next door neighbour, Dukes 92, which rode the storm and has come out busier than ever. The bar area itself is very cool and stylish, low ceilings adding a touch of intimacy (and danger if you’re tall). There’s loads of outdoor canalside seating and it’s hard to find a better setting in town. Inside, there’s rooms available to hire offering conference and banqueting areas whilst the upstairs room with its dancefloor and terrace, which was once the most important VIP room in town, is popular with private birthday and office parties. Unfortunately, unless it’s the height of the summer, when it can get very crowded, Barca only seems to get busy when there’s a high profile club night or large party here. It’s hard to say why as it has most of the ingredients to still be one of the best bars in town.

Because of this you can expect to see the theme throughout including padded walls, padded seats, a minimalistic feel adds further to the feel of a clinical area, they also decked the place out with quirkey and classically designed furniture and accessories. By day Bedlam is a bar to relax, with their S&M Menu or sausage and mash for those who are thinking S&M in a mainstream bar too much, by evening it’s a chilled wine bar and then late evening the change to a club starts to take place with the music played so loud you can hear it at either end of Peter Street!  Hopefully the formula is more successful than the ill-fated Jar Bar and Breeze which previously tried and failed in this location.

  • If you’re looking for somewhere to get a drink or a bite to eat before a show then you can’t get any closer and more convenient than the Stalls Cafe Car inside the Bridgewater Hall.  They offer a range of wines, beers and spirits as well as tea and coffee. On concert nights, bars are open on all four foyer levels, serving both before the concert and during the interval. Interval drinks can also be pre-ordered on all four levels. At lunch times (11am-2:30pm) there’s a good choice of wraps, sandwiches, platters and full meals to choose from, with a smaller pre-concert menu available between 5:30pm-6:45pm (reservations normally required).

Baa Bar, Deansgate Locks November 8, 2006

Baa Bar, Deansgate LocksBaa Bar, Deansgate Locks - Arch 11, Deansgate Locks, Whitworth Street, Manchester, M1 5LH map

  • Baa Bar is the chain of North West bars created by popular Manchester property company Urban Splash. Hot on the heels of their Liverpool branch, the Deansgate Locks offering was their first in Manchester city centre (another has since opened in the Gay Village), and it has remained popular for well over 10 years. It has recently had a refurbishment, losing the disgusting uni-sex toilets in favour of a more intimate upstairs area and better seating on the ground floor. They haven’t however lost their superb famous shooters, which are so ridiculously cheap, and the many offers on bottles - it makes Baa Bar a binge drinkers paradise! The DJ’s spin funky house tunes, chart hits, disco classics and Madchester anthems whilst the bouncer’s are a lot friendlier than some of the others nearby. Whilst other bars on The Locks tend not to be as busy as they once were, Baa Bar remains crammed at weekends and the comfy sofa’s get taken up quickly!

  • Bar Est (formerly known as Henry’s Bar Cafe) is located under Manchester’s Premier Travel Inn. Bar Est is a large relaxed bar and restaurant with outside seating overlooking the GMEX and the grand Midland Hotel, great for people watching. They serve a range of typical pub grub and also have Sky TV for the match. Bar Est is just a 2 minute walk from the Bridgewater Hall which makes it a great meeting point before going to that show, or a cut through to the Deansgate Locks area.

  • With a choice of over 150 whiskies and bourbons, cask ales and fine wines it’s hard to find many better pubs in the whole of the Greater Manchester region. As well as the many regulars you’ll also bump in to musicians and performers from the Bridgewater Hall which is based on the opposite side of the road. From the outside it looks like a small uninviting pub but inside it’s a warm, friendly, tardis like boozer with rooms going off in all directions. One of the upstairs rooms is sometimes used as a live music and poetry venue, and there’s even a secret beer garden at the back.

Being a straight bar in the village, ensures there’s always a diverse mix of people taking advantage of the famous cheap shooters.  The bar is decked out in loads of bright colours, mirrors and neons, with plenty of booth seating upstairs and a large dance floor downstairs.
