Life Cafe & The Late Room November 10, 2006
Life Cafe - 23 Peter Street, Manchester, M1 4DJ map
- Life Cafe, and its basement live music venue, The Late Room, is a real gem at the Deansgate end of Peter Street, attracting a more discerning clientelle than Squares and Brannigans which sit either side of it. It’s a great cocktail bar with plenty of seating and a large dance floor, which also doubles up as a standing area for when the big name bands play their more exclusive intimate gigs here (and there’s been many like Alanis Morissette, Beautiful South, The Corrs, James Blunt, Stereophonics, Jamie Cullum, the Fun Lovin’ Criminals, Craig David and a whole host of Manchester bands to name but a few). The basement bar, The Late Room, offers a smaller staging area with a regular line up of International jazz, folk, blues and soul stars as well as smaller indie bands and local talent.

The Life Cafe is one of those places that looks and feels really good, a combination of upmarket bar and gig venue - not an easy task! However, although the venue hosts some really good gigs, it’s major let down is it’s bar. On a recent visit to watch a band, not only did the place run out of on tap beer but the drinks tasted rather strange, and they had absolutely no snacks of any description!? I ended up drinking Corona but they didn’t even have lime for them. Every time I went to the bar and asked for something that would be normal in any other place, the bar staff seemed almost embarrassed to have to keep saying NO! My advice is not to go here if you just want a drink!
